ECIS - European Cancer Information System

Database description

The data sources of studies contributing to the ECIS web application is reported hereafter, including the available periods and related statistics

Incidence and mortality estimates

Incidence estimates for 2024 are based on historical incidence data from cancer registries participating in ECIS and Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, volume XII.

Mortality estimates for 2024 are based on mortality data extracted from WHO mortality databaseEUROSTAT, or provided directly by cancer registries.

Long-term estimates

The long-term estimates up to 2040 are based on the projected 2022 incidence and mortality rates and the projected populations up to year 2040 from EUROSTAT.

Historical incidence and mortality

Historical incidence data are provided by population-based cancer registries affiliated to the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR). Historical mortality data derive from official statistical offices.

Methodological notes

The quality of ECIS data is guaranteed by a rigorous data validation process. This process is based on the quality checks described in the ECIS data validation procedure and implemented in the JRC-ENCR Quality Checks Software (QCS).

Given the continuous evolving of cancer registration practices over time and their different uptake across European registries, known data comparability issues for specific registries are flagged in the data explorer and further described below.

  • The incidence of urological tumours (carcinoma of bladder, carcinoma of renal pelvis, carcinoma of ureter) may not be comparable between registries, or across the time series for the same registry, due to different recording practices of in situ tumours.
  • For the registries of Berlin-Brandenburg and Liechtenstein, data for the population under 19 and 21 years old respectively, is not available. Please avoid using these age ranges when browsing data for these registries, as the resulting rates would not be meaningful.
  • Due to privacy restrictions, for some registries data cannot be shown if there are 1-2 cases (or 1-4 cases or deaths for Finland) recorded for each combination of cancer entity, age, sex, and incidence year. Therefore, strata with 1-2 cases (or 1-4 cases or deaths for Finland) are censored by reshuffling cases in 5-year periods. The sum of cases/deaths in each of these 5-year periods is the same as in the source data, but the number of cases/deaths for each year differs from observed data.

Historical childhood incidence

Historical incidence data for the childhood population are provided by childhood population-based cancer registries affiliated to the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR).

Database notes

Data for the areas of Aragon-Barcelona-Lleida was provided by the Spanish Registry of Childhood Tumors - Spanish Society of Paediatric Hematology and Oncology (RETI-SEHOP), an information system on childhood cancer in Spain. RETI registers all cancer tumours sent by paediatric oncologist of SEHOP. In the areas covered by the data published in ECIS it operates on a population-based basis.

Methodological notes

  • The incidence rates of the ICCC3 group "CNS and miscellaneous intracranial and intraspinal neoplasms" and related subgroups may not be comparable between registries due to different recording practices of non-malignant (benign or borderline) tumours. Registries that do not record such tumours are expected to have lower incidence rates and they have been labelled with an appropriate note in the ECIS data explorer.

  • Due to privacy restrictions, for Finland data cannot be shown if there are 1-4 cases recorded for each combination of cancer entity, age, and incidence year. Therefore, strata with 1-4 cases are censored by reshuffling cases in 5-year periods. The sum of cases in each of these 5-year periods is the same as in the source data, but the number of cases for each year differs from observed data.

Survival estimates

Historical data used for the survival estimates are provided by population-based cancer registries affiliated to the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR).
